A Full Diagnostic
Q: Is an ultrasound safe during pregnancy?
A: Yes. Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves, not radiation. It has been used for decades and is considered completely safe for both the mother and the developing baby.
Q: What is the difference between a regular Ultrasound and a Doppler?
A: A standard ultrasound creates images of internal organs and structures. A Color Doppler specifically visualises and measures the movement of blood through your arteries and veins.
Q: Do I need to prepare for my scan?
A: Preparation depends on the type of scan. For abdominal scans, you may need to fast for 6-8 hours. For pelvic or pregnancy scans, you may be asked to drink water and have a full bladder.
Q: How long does a typical ultrasound take?
A: Most scans are completed within 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the complexity of the area being examined.
Q: Why would I need a Doppler for my legs?
A: A Doppler is usually recommended if you have symptoms like leg swelling, pain, or suspected blood clots (DVT), as it allows the doctor to see if the blood is flowing properly or if there is a blockage.
Q: Can ultrasound detect cancer?
A: Ultrasound is an excellent tool for identifying cysts, nodules, or tumors. While it can help differentiate between fluid-filled and solid masses, further tests like a biopsy may be needed for a definitive diagnosis.
Q: Will I get the results immediately?
A: At Gifted Hands Hospital, we strive for quick turnaround times. In most cases, a preliminary report or the images are available shortly after the procedure, followed by a detailed formal report.
Q: Does the procedure hurt?
A: Not at all. The technician will apply a cool gel and move a small handheld device (transducer) over your skin. You may feel slight pressure, but it is generally a painless experience.
